About Hip Replacement: Walking After Hip Replacement – Exercises

Calf Pumps

You can begin your exercise program on the day of surgery by simply using your own muscles to pump your foot up and down. This helps you to regain the muscle control of your legs and to prevent clot formation. Do this whenever you are in bed, throughout your hospitalization and when you go home.

Straight Leg Raises

Brace your body with your other leg flexed at the knee and foot against the bed. Use your other leg to push against the bed. Keep your knees apart, and straighten the knee on the “replaced side.” Now use your quadriceps muscles, abdominal muscles, and hip muscles to lift your leg off of the bed.
