About Knee Replacement: Walking After Knee Replacement – Day Three
Medications
Your pain will be managed with pills.
The nurse will review the medicines you are to take home.
DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WHILE YOU ARE TAKING PAIN MEDICINES.
Activity
You will be able to get out of bed independently.
You will be able to walk 100 ft. with a walker or crutches.
The therapist will teach you how to safely go up and down stairs.
You will continue to work on knee bending and straightening daily. You will be independent with your knee exercise program for home.
Breathing Exercises
Continue to do your deep breathing exercises every 4 hours while awake.
Diet
The combination of pain medication and little activity may cause constipation. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink several glasses of liquid daily to prevent this from happening.
Bathroom
You should be walking to the bathroom with a staff member every time you need to go.
Self Care
The therapist will teach you how to get in and out of the tub or shower.
You will be able to dress and bathe yourself.
Planning Your Return Home
The nurse will review directions for your care at home including care of your incision and when to return to your doctor.
The equipment you need should be at your home before discharge.
