About Knee Replacement: Walking After Knee Replacement - Walking Program

Why walk?

• Walking improves your endurance, strength, balance, and coordination as well as your general health.

What special equipment is needed?

• Wear loose fitting clothes for the temperature.
• Wear comfortable, shock absorbent shoes.

Where can you walk?

• Walk in your neighborhood or walk indoors where the climate is controlled.
• Avoid extreme outdoor temperatures.
• Walk on smooth, level surfaces.
• If you have physical limits, take several shorter walks throughout the day.

What precautions should you take:

• Always check with your regular medical doctor before beginning an exercise program.
• Walk only as long as you are comfortable.

How do I begin a walking program?

• Walk at an easy pace for 5-10 minutes 3-4 days a week for 2-3 weeks.
• Increase the amount of time you walk by up to 5 minutes per week as long as you are comfortable.You may increase your walking time until you reach 45 minutes 4 days a week as long as you have no pain or discomfort.
• If you have physical limits, take several shorter walks throughout the day.
• You should be able to carry on a conversation while walking.
