Why walk?
Walking improves your endurance, strength, balance, and coordination as well as your general health.
What special equipment is needed?
Wear loose fitting clothes for the temperature.
Wear comfortable, shock absorbent shoes.
Where can you walk?
Walk in your neighborhood or walk indoors where the climate is controlled.
Avoid extreme outdoor temperatures.
Walk on smooth, level surfaces.
If you have physical limits, take several shorter walks throughout the day.
What precautions should you take:
Always check with your regular medical doctor before beginning an exercise program.
Walk only as long as you are comfortable.
How do I begin a walking program?
Walk at an easy pace for 5-10 minutes 3-4 days a week for 2-3 weeks.
Increase the amount of time you walk by up to 5 minutes per week as long as you are comfortable.You may increase your walking time until you reach 45 minutes 4 days a week as long as you have no pain or discomfort.
If you have physical limits, take several shorter walks throughout the day.
You should be able to carry on a conversation while walking.
